Freezer cups, Flexigauge, lubricants and sealing pastes, just a few of the large collection of universal resources used in the workshop. These products are also often sold separately to customers. Wilmink has a large number of such products in its range. We will take you through some examples.
Measuring the bearing clearance between the crankshaft and the connecting rod is easy with Flexigauge or plastigauge. This product comes in different versions/colours, starting with green for the smallest sizes, then red, blue and yellow. Use of the product is simple. Remove the bearing cover, wipe the tappets and the shells clean so that they are free of oil. Place a piece of Flexigauge or plastiglass in the bearing, fit the bearing cover and tighten the bolts to the correct tension. Then immediately remove the bearing cover without having rotated the shaft or bearings. Then compare the width of the flexigauge or plastigauge with the scale on the piece of paper. In this way it can be checked whether the play is sufficient and therefore big (or small) enough.
Freeze cups, freeze plugs, freeze plates, cover discs, are all terms for a product with the same function: covering holes that are not needed in the engine block. Sand moulds are often used when casting an engine block. Sand moulds are attached to the mould to form cylinders or other cavities, for example. After casting, this sand is removed and thus cavities remain where the inner sand mould was attached to the outer mould. These cavities no longer have any function and are covered with plugs, also known as freeze plugs or freeze caps. These caps or plates are made of thin sheet steel and galvanised to prevent rust. If a block is overhauled or the plates are worn, they can be replaced. Wilmink has almost all frequently used sizes in stock.
Lubricants often refer to cans of oil to fill up the block. Wilmink however thinks of lubricants as assembly lubricants. For example, this can be an oil to facilitate the assembly of closely fitting parts.
Sometimes it is necessary to use a liquid gasket. Elring and Reinz, for example, are suppliers of many types of gaskets, elastic seals and gaskets that can withstand high temperatures and meet the strict requirements of sealing.
In addition to universal parts for large and small engines, various tools and handy equipment are also available. Think for example of transparent plastic cards to check the hone image or pattern of a cylinder wall. Kolbenschmidt also offers a variety of different mounting materials. Examples include a bus to mount a piston with springs in the block, a gauge to determine the head gasket thickness and a case filled with tools to mount piston rings. In short, various materials are available.
