In this blog: more about the function of the valve spring in the engine. Then you understand why Wilmink Performance always gives the advice: take no risks and choose the expert who has proven itself for a long time. When it comes to good, reliable valve springs, which survive for a long time even under difficult conditions, then you quickly end up with Melling. The company's motto for everything they do, including aftermarket products, from camshafts to cylinder liners and everything in between, is 'Excellence in Manufacturing'. And what about the small, but essential, component the valve spring?
The name Melling is a well-known name in the racing world, especially in the United States. You come across the name as a sticker on a race car at NHRA drag racing and on the show floor of the famous SEMA Convention, the annual feast for parts enthusiasts of classics, muscle cars and other special cars. Part of the huge company and formerly known for its innovative oil pumps, is Melling Performance Springs. That is the supplier of springs in all shapes and sizes, always in OE quality. At Melling, they combine traditional craftsmanship with high-tech innovations; in their own state-of-the-art laboratory they research how springs react to 'fatigue', and which materials and designs can improve the quality. They themselves say: 'Quality is all we do'.
Intake and exhaust valves of the engine are controlled by the distribution and camshaft together. The eccentrics or cams of the camshaft push the valves open at the right time. In doing so, as much fuel/air mixture as possible must enter the combustion chamber. The valve plate ensures an airtight seal between the cylinder and the cylinder head.
Valve springs are coated with an anti-corrosion coating and are 'shot peened'. If the valves are dropped or damaged, small cracks can appear in the valve spring as a result, causing it to break. This results in (expensive) engine damage.
A valve spring is selected with care. Combined with the right valve spring pressure, the engine block will perform optimally and generate as much power as possible. In the performance world, "fast camshafts" and stronger or double valve springs go hand in hand. A camshaft with more "lift" is, by definition, useless if you use the standard valve spring. Our performance specialists will be happy to help you with the right advice.
Melling has 54 years of experience with valve springs. In 2022, Melling launched an improved line of valve springs. For standard automotive applications as well as racing and heavy duty. What makes it special? The ideas and questions from the market that form the basis for the innovations in Melling valve springs. In other words: what do customers want and how can we prevent valve spring problems even better with our own product?
With the line of valve springs for racing purposes, it comes even more precise: there, springs are that are not completely round, but slightly oval, are used, also known as ovate springs. Even the slightest deviation suddenly makes the difference.
After reading this blog, there's no need to hesitate. Choose valve springs from Melling. Like your customer, the rest of the engine block will also be happy.
