Cylinder heads

The function of the four-stroke cylinder head is to streamline the intake and exhaust gases into the cylinder(s) while also injecting fuel. The cylinder head also seals the bottom block so that compression can be built up in the cylinders for optimum combustion.

Considering the number of rotating and moving parts, the cylinder head is the most complex part of a combustion engine. In addition, there are numerous parts mounted in and on the cylinder head, including the intake and exhaust manifold, camshafts, valves and distribution. When fitting a new or reconditioned cylinder head, it is also important that a new head gasket is fitted and, for most engines, also new bolts and/or nuts as these are usually single-use stretch bolts.
