Lubrication of the engine block is crucial for operation; if there is no or insufficient lubrication, engine damage will occur within seconds. The oil lubricating film is lost and this causes the friction and heat between the contact surfaces to become extremely high, resulting in wear/defect. The oil pump circulates oil throughout the engine block and oil filter. The oil pump is mounted at the bottom of the engine block with a suction tube in the crankcase to suck in oil (unless it is a dry-sump lubrication system). The oil pump is driven by the oil pump drive shaft or by means of a chain transmission. A defective oil pump is often caused by age (wear and tear) or a clogged suction strainer. As a result, an oil pump can no longer suck in sufficient oil, producing the above mentioned consequences.
